Thera Cane Secrets

By: Karl Zarse, MD

Foam rolling is a phenomenal deep tissue massage tool for long muscles of the legs and low back. However, reaching some of the smaller muscles like the ones over your shoulder blade and mid back are hard reach with a traditional foam roller.

This is where the thera cane really shines. You can reach those hard to massage areas and really apply a good amount of pressure and movement to break the spasm and encourage blood flow and healing.

If you want to get the most out of this device, spend some time learning the anatomy of the muscles in the area in which you are interested. It is not as complex as you might think, and once you have it down, you will know what muscles you are targeting and be more effective.

Once you know the layout and what muscle you are targeting, get the Thera cane over the tight area and work it with the grain of the muscle, and then across the grain. Cover the full length of the muscle while applying extra pressure and movement over the problem area. As with the foam roller, crunching and pain are common at first, but as the Thera cane breaks up the spasm you will notice relief and softness in the area.

I encourage my patients to have this device accessible throughout the day. Use it while you are working to keep those problem areas from getting to set it. Even 45 seconds of firm, focused massage can make a dramatic difference in how you feel at the end of the day.

I was not a big believer in this device at first. I kept it on the wall next to me, and whenever I felt the slightest tension, I would take a minute or two and really get after it. I noticed a dramatic difference by getting on it early, rather than wait till the end of the day and do a formal long routine.

Staying flexible and while training is a challenge when you add in life’s daily demands. Use the Thera cane in a proactive way and you will experience a noticeable decrease in pain and an increase in your overall performance.
